Martyn, Dave (Freestone) and I met at the above on September30, 1962. Mike Rennison moved in later. We had so much in common: grammar school boys of similar backgrounds at university, football, politics, walking and, of course, the White Horse, the Skinners Arms etc. The trips were numerous and I recall one visit to Rochdale in summer 1964 which included United vs West Ham at Old Trafford, the Yorkshire Dales and Blackpool. When living in Manchester, Martyn was a regular and utterly dependable visitor when I was recovering from an operation at home. We all went our separate ways in due course, married and became fathers. Meetings became spasmodic but we stayed in touch and later met with some regularity at the Chandos near Trafalgar Square. Trevor Chambers also ex-Aber made it a foursome. Such meetings were of a pattern: beer, lunch, nostalgia, mickey-taking, and always politics and football. Trevor and I still occasionally meet for a London walk, lunch and a drink; but, with the passing of Martyn, it feels very much like the end of an era. He was a good friend and I shall miss him.
